Rowan College of South Jersey’s (RCSJ) Gloucester campus
Student Veterans Organization (SVO) and the Gloucester County Board of Chosen
Freeholders hosted their annual Veterans Day celebration on Monday, Nov. 11.
The ceremony took place in the Physical Education Center,
opening with the Camden County Emerald Society Pipes and Drums and an
invocation by deacon and Gloucester County Clerk James Hogan. Monroe Township
Councilman Cody Miller sang the national anthem and lead the Pledge of
Allegiance before turning the ceremony over to Gloucester County Board of
Chosen Freeholder Director Robert M. Damminger to serve as the master of
ceremonies and provided a welcome alongside RCSJ President Frederick Keating.
U.S. Coast Guard veteran and Director of Student Affairs and
Military Services John Ryder presented opening remarks. Ceremony guest speakers
included Freeholder Veteran Liaison Daniel Christy; U.S. Army veteran Christine
Thomas, U.S. Army veteran and RCSJ student Laison Dunnavant; and U.S. Army
veteran and Veteran Student Academic Advisor Dr. Walter Gholson. The ceremony
officials took time to recognize the 24 members of RCSJ’s Gloucester campus
faculty and staff who have served our country.
The highlight of this ceremony for many was the presentation
of the EOF club’s 2019 Veteran Award to Danielle Emmons to recognize her
bravery, determination and success in both her academic work and her career.
Emmons, a sophomore in RCSJ’s Criminal Justice program with plans to transfer
to Rowan University to complete her bachelor’s degree, served as a Senior
Airman in the U.S. Air Force. She is a mother, future wife and, in addition to
her studies, serves in the Community Policing Unit of the Deptford Police
Department. Emmons enlisted in the Air Force to support her country, which she
continues to do so through her work in law enforcement. She was selected for
this award based on her inspirational story and the many roles she has played
in support of her country, her community and her family.
Rowan College of South Jersey’s Gloucester campus is
located at 1400 Tanyard Road in Deptford, just off Exit 56 of Route 55.
