On Wednesday, September 6, 2023, at 12 pm, the Rowan College Foundation, in collaboration with the Office of the President and the Damminger family, held an endowment signing ceremony at Rowan College of South Jersey, Gloucester Campus, in honor and memory of late Gloucester County Commission Director Robert M. Damminger.
The Robert M. Damminger Memorial Endowment will assist a student through scholarship support while they pursue their goals in the field of education. This $10,000 endowment will fund an annual scholarship of $500 to one student. The ceremony was well attended by both Rowan College staff and RCSJ Foundation Board members, as well as College Trustees and Gloucester County Commissioners, who were honored to attend the signing for their former colleague. “This well attended event to honor former Commissioner Director Damminger is a testament to his unwavering support of Gloucester County and Rowan College of South Jersey, said RCSJ Foundation Director Cody Miller. “Bob Damminger was a champion for our institution and education as a whole."
“Bob Damminger was a good friend of mine, shared RCSJ President Fred Keating. “To be here today to reflect on Bob's life and all the gifts he gave to us and to this County and to the education of this County, and to support the teachers of tomorrow will be part of his legacy. On behalf of the College and the student body, thank you, thank you, thank you."
Damminger was always enthusiastic to serve his community. He started as a council member in Paulsboro in 1986 and served until 1997. Damminger served for 24 years as a Gloucester County Commissioner, with eleven of those years spent as the Director. Professionally, Damminger served as the Deputy Executive Director of Operations at SJTA from 2002-2022. He was passionate and instrumental in the formation of Gloucester County Veterans Memorial Cemetery and the preservation of open space in the county. Some of the other projects close to his heart were increasing the size of the County College [RCSJ], the spay and neuter clinic at Gloucester County Animal Shelter, and the Mega Site for COVID vaccines and the annual flu shot clinic.
“I just want to thank everyone for coming today. This would have really meant a lot to my dad. Education was very important to him, and this college meant the world to him, said Damminger's daughter, Kim Damminger. “He was instrumental with President Keating and [former] Senate President Steve Sweeney, in making this college accessible for all and making this college one of the best community colleges in the whole nation. My dad, he was one of the greatest people I ever knew. He would be very proud of this honor, and this is a special day. Thank you."
